Music Ministry

Picture
Lessons and Carols, 2024

what is the purpose of a choir?

A choir functions in many ways both inside and out of the liturgy. Primarily, the choir serves to lead the congregation's responses and acclamations in order to draw us deeper into prayer. By preparing to sing beautiful and challenging music, choirs glorify God and edify the congregations they minister to. Choirs also serve as a small-group within the parish for faith formation, being for the members a place of spiritual growth and nurturing.

The only thing missing is you!

Do you sing or play an instrument? We invite persons of all skill levels to join us! The ability to read music is not required to be a member of the choir. For more information, please speak with Mark Wilson after mass or contact us at the information below.

Commitment information:
  • Choir members should plan to attend choir practice weekly on Thursday evenings at 6:15pm. Members are expected to arrive at least a half-hour prior to the mass they choose to sing at. On the first Sunday of each month, members sing at a 'combined-choir mass' on a rotating basis.
  • We encourage our instrumentalists to play at mass. Players are expected to be proficient with their instrument and practice on their own. Instrumentalists are expected to arrive at least a half-hour prior to the mass they choose to play at.
  • Because of the role's nature as servant-leadership, cantors are required to be part of the Sunday choir for at least 6 months prior to appointment. Cantors should plan to sing with the choir even when they are not serving as cantor.

Sometimes choir practice just isn't enough. You can find links to many useful recordings here to help you learn the music that we use during mass!
